Explore the beauty of sgraffito, a centuries-old pottery technique where carving meets color. Over the course of this 1-day workshop, students will receive a pre-formed piece (like a mug or cup) and use underglaze paints to create their own surface designs. You’ll then learn how to carve through the painted layers, uncovering intricate textures and imagery. By the end, you’ll walk away with a finished ceramic vessel that’s both functional and uniquely your own. Open to all levels—beginners welcome!
Madalynn is a full-time ceramic artist based in the beautiful Rogue Valley of southern Oregon. She’s been working with clay for over 7 years and studied ceramics in college before diving headfirst into life as a professional maker. Her work has been featured at beloved Oregon shows like the Oregon Country Fair and the Lithia Artisans Market, and she also shares her creations online through her website and vibrant social media community on Instagram and TikTok.
Deeply inspired by the Pacific Northwest landscape she’s called home for the past 14 years, Madalynn often weaves native and medicinal plants into her designs—a natural pairing with her practice as a certified herbalist. She primarily works with the ancient technique of sgraffito, carving intricate, nature-inspired imagery into the surfaces of her pottery.
Madalynn loves nothing more than sharing her passion for clay with others, creating a warm and encouraging environment for students to explore their creativity, get their hands muddy, and experience the magic of turning clay into art.
