From recreation and local travel to exploring charming small towns and state parks, this highway embodies the spirit of the Pacific Northwest. The updated plan will enhance its value, preserving its unique character while improving its role in connecting communities and supporting local growth.

Location

The State Route 105 (SR 105) corridor in Washington State is a region of stunning natural beauty and cultural significance, nestled between Willapa Bay and Grays Harbor and shaped by its relationship with the Pacific Ocean. With a rich history, the area was once home to Native American settlements and later became a hub for industries like whaling, fishing, cranberry farming, and timber production. Today, it is celebrated for its diverse ecosystems, including estuaries, wetlands, tidal flats, and beaches, which support salmon streams, oyster beds, migratory birds, and elk habitats. Tourism has been integral to the region for over a century, offering activities like whale watching, clam digging, kayaking, and storm-watching, while interpretive centers and signage educate visitors about the area’s natural and cultural heritage. The SR 105 Corridor Management Plan seeks to enhance the highway as a scenic and recreational route while preserving the region’s way of life and supporting tourism infrastructure, such as viewpoints, interpretive trails, and visitor facilities. Key challenges include addressing erosion at Washaway Beach, drainage issues in Grayland, and balancing increased tourism with the conservation of the region’s natural environment and rural character.
