In this one-day workshop, students will create their own ceramic chia pet using coil-building and sculpting techniques. Working with terra cotta clay, participants will design and build an animal of their choice while learning strategies for creating expressive forms and playful details.
The class will cover how to incorporate the textured areas and surface treatments needed to support chia seed growth, ensuring that each piece functions just like a traditional chia pet. Whether realistic, whimsical, or completely imaginative, students will have plenty of freedom to develop a creature with its own personality.
Finished pieces will be fired to a porous terra cotta finish, making them ideal for sprouting and growing chia seeds. Each participant will receive a starter pack of chia seeds when they pick up their finished piece.
Students will leave class with their sculptures ready for drying and firing; finished chia pets will be available for pickup approximately 3–4 weeks later.
