More Information:
In this hands-on workshop, students will create ceramic vessels specifically designed for raku firing. Using a combination of coil-building and pinching techniques, participants will explore vessel forms that take full advantage of the dramatic crackles, metallic flashes, smoky blacks, and unpredictable surface effects that make raku so exciting.
The class will focus on designing interesting forms with generous, intentional surfaces, keeping the firing process in mind from the very beginning. Discussions will include how shape, contour, and texture can influence the final appearance of raku glazes and atmospheric effects.
The workshop also includes a raku decorating and firing session on August 30th at 11:00 AM. Participants are encouraged to attend, as they will have the opportunity to glaze their work, experience the firing process firsthand, and witness the dramatic transformation that occurs when pieces emerge red-hot from the kiln.
Students will leave class with their vessels ready for drying and preparation for the upcoming raku firing. Finished pieces will be available following the firing and cooling process.
