More Information:
In this two-session workshop, students will create decorative ceramic orbs using coil-building techniques. Session One will focus on constructing and refining spherical forms, with an emphasis on smoothing surfaces and creating shapes that will respond beautifully to atmospheric firing.
Session Two will explore the preparation techniques that give pit-fired work its distinctive character. Students will learn about terra sigillata, surface treatments, and other materials that react with fire to produce rich color variation and dramatic markings. Demonstrations will cover application techniques and strategies for designing surfaces with the pit firing process in mind.
The communal pit firing will take place on August 2nd at 2:00 PM. During the firing, participants will learn how combustible materials, oxides, and protective wraps can be used to create unique surface effects and one-of-a-kind patterns. Attendance at the firing is highly encouraged, as it provides a valuable opportunity to experience the full process and see how pit-fired surfaces develop.
Finished pieces will be available for pickup after the firing and cooling process.
